How to Care for Slate Floors (and Other Natural Stone Surfaces)

At Highland Home Design, we love incorporating natural stone into our projects for the texture, depth, and timeless beauty it brings to a space. We recently installed slate floors in a laundry room, and after doing a bit of research and consulting with our trusted stone mason, we wanted to share what we learned. These same tips apply to other natural stones like bluestone, limestone, and travertine, all of which offer durability and natural character when properly cared for.

What to Avoid

No Acids or Harsh Chemicals
Skip the vinegar, lemon juice, bleach, or ammonia-based cleaners as they can etch and dull the surface of natural stone over time.

No Abrasives
Avoid using steel wool, rough scrub pads, or gritty cleaners. These can scratch the surface and remove the natural finish of the stone.

No Rubber Mats
Rubber-backed mats can trap moisture and discolor both the stone and grout. Instead, choose mats with a breathable or natural fiber backing.

Long-Term Protection

Sealant
Slate and other natural stones are porous and benefit from a penetrating sealer. We recommend reapplying every 1 to 3 years depending on foot traffic. To test whether your floors need resealing, sprinkle a few drops of water. If it beads up, you’re protected. If it soaks in, it’s time to reseal.

Felt Pads
Add felt pads under furniture legs to prevent scratches and scuffs, especially in high-use areas like kitchens, mudrooms, or laundry spaces.

Natural stone is one of those materials that only gets better with time. With a little care and maintenance, your slate or bluestone floors will continue to bring beauty and texture to your home for years to come.
