One of the finishing details we were most excited to incorporate in our recent kitchen renovation was zellige tile. If you’ve spent any time browsing beautiful kitchens lately, you’ve likely seen it. Zellige has quickly become one of our favorite materials to work with because of the depth, texture, and character it brings to a space.

In this kitchen, we selected a 2×6 zellige tile and installed it in a horizontal offset pattern. The result is a backsplash that feels rich, layered, and full of movement—exactly the kind of detail that elevates a thoughtfully designed kitchen.
As you’ll see in the photos from this project, the tile reflects light differently across the surface, creating subtle variations that add warmth and interest throughout the room.
What Is Zellige Tile?
Zellige tile is a handcrafted clay tile traditionally made in Morocco. Each tile is individually molded, glazed, and fired, which means no two pieces are exactly alike.
Because of this handmade process, zellige tile naturally includes:
• Slight variations in color
• Uneven edges
• Subtle differences in thickness
• Natural texture and movement
Rather than being considered flaws, these characteristics are exactly what make zellige so beautiful. When installed together, the tiles create a surface that feels organic and full of life.
In a world of perfectly uniform materials, zellige offers something refreshingly authentic.
How Zellige Was Used in This Kitchen
In this kitchen renovation, the backsplash became an opportunity to introduce texture and visual interest.
We chose a 2×6 zellige tile installed in a horizontal offset pattern, which allows the natural variations in the tile to shine. The tiles were intentionally installed without spacers, allowing the handcrafted edges to create organic grout lines and subtle irregularity across the wall.
Paired with the soft movement of MSI Valentin quartz countertops and the warmth of the custom wood range hood, the zellige backsplash helps create a kitchen that feels layered, timeless, and welcoming.
It’s a detail that feels both elevated and approachable at the same time.

Where Zellige Tile Works Best
Zellige tile works beautifully in spaces where texture and visual depth are desired. Some of our favorite places to use it include:
• Kitchen backsplashes
• Range walls and statement cooking areas
• Bathroom walls and shower surrounds
• Powder rooms
• Fireplace surrounds
Because the tile reflects light differently across its surface, it can add incredible warmth and dimension, especially when paired with natural materials like wood, stone, and plaster finishes.
For homeowners who appreciate handcrafted materials, zellige can become one of the most memorable design elements in a room.
When Zellige Tile May Not Be the Best Choice
While we love working with zellige tile, it’s important for homeowners to understand that it is not the right material for everyone.
Because it is handmade, zellige tile comes with natural imperfections. Edges are not perfectly straight, surfaces can vary slightly, and the glaze may show subtle variation across the installation.

For homeowners who prefer perfectly uniform, highly consistent materials, a more traditional ceramic or porcelain tile may be a better fit.
Zellige is best suited for people who enjoy texture, character, and a slightly imperfect handmade look.
Understanding the Investment
Zellige tile is typically a higher price point material compared to many standard ceramic or porcelain tiles.
The cost reflects the handcrafted process involved in creating each piece, as well as the additional care often required during installation.
However, for many homeowners, the beauty and uniqueness of the finished result make it well worth the investment.
A zellige backsplash can completely transform a space and add the kind of warmth and texture that’s difficult to achieve with more uniform materials.
A Beautiful Detail That Makes a Difference
In our recent kitchen renovation, the zellige tile backsplash became one of the most special details in the room. It adds depth, movement, and character in a way that feels natural and timeless.

When thoughtfully paired with the right materials and design elements, zellige tile can elevate an entire space.
If you’re someone who appreciates handcrafted materials and the beauty of subtle variation, zellige may be the perfect choice for your kitchen or bathroom project.
