With Christmas just around the corner and the whirlwind of Instagram influencers buzzing around, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by holiday decor options.
Many of us find ourselves overbuying, opting for lower-quality items, or struggling to decide what truly adds value to our homes.
At Highland Home Design Co., we’re here to help you navigate the noise and focus on decor pieces that we genuinely believe are worth the investment.
This holiday season, let’s prioritize quality over quantity, ensuring that each piece you choose enhances your home and brings joy for years to come.
1. Choose Timeless Styles
When selecting holiday decor, opt for classic designs that won’t go out of style. Look for pieces that embody the spirit of the season without relying on fleeting trends.
Neutral color palettes, natural materials, and traditional motifs can create a warm and inviting atmosphere, making your home feel festive yet sophisticated.
In our personal home, we embrace a neutral palette that provides the flexibility to incorporate seasonal colors without needing to replace all our foundational decor.
For holiday decorating, we maintain this neutral approach, allowing us to easily introduce seasonal accents like cranberry, forest green, dusty blue, gold, black, or silver.
This versatility not only aligns with our aesthetic goals for the season but also ensures a cohesive and timeless look throughout our home.
2. Invest in Quality Materials
While it may be tempting to buy numerous inexpensive decorations, investing in a few high-quality pieces can make a world of difference.
Look for decor made from durable materials like wood, glass, or metal, which can withstand the test of time. Not only do these items look better, but they also hold up year after year, saving you money in the long run.
When it comes to holiday decor, there are a few key areas where we believe investing is truly worthwhile: artificial trees, stockings, and greenery.
These items should be durable enough to transition with you year after year, so it’s important to choose quality pieces that won’t need replacing every few years.
A well-designed artificial tree that assembles in minutes is a valuable investment that saves time and effort. Stockings, too, hold a special place in family traditions and memories.
When my kids were young, I chose four identical stockings, not anticipating a future with four children. It’s a great reminder that companies often retire specific styles, fabrics, and materials, so if you want everything to match, it’s wise to purchase more than you currently need.
I’m also a firm believer in the beauty of greenery for your stair banister, mantel, and front door—these are the focal points of your home during the holidays.
While greenery can seem expensive, the cost of replacing it every year can quickly add up. Investing in high-quality pieces means you can enjoy them for many years to come.
3. Focus on Meaningful Items
Select decorations that hold sentimental value or reflect your personal style.
Whether it’s an heirloom ornament, a handcrafted piece from a local artist, or decor that represents a cherished memory, these meaningful items will add depth to your holiday decor and create lasting memories.
This cradle to cross wreath is one of my purchases for the season. We love celebrating the Advent season and this will be a meaningful decor piece that will serve us year after year.
4. Versatility is Key
Consider decor that can transition seamlessly from holiday to everyday use.
Items like decorative bowls, candles, or even cozy textiles can enhance your space during the holidays and remain relevant throughout the year. This approach not only maximizes your investment but also reduces clutter.
5. Plan Ahead
Finally, take the time to plan your holiday decor strategy. Create a wishlist of items you truly want and need, and resist the temptation to purchase on a whim.
By being intentional about your choices, you’ll feel more fulfilled and satisfied with every investment you make.
