Choosing the right rug size is essential for creating balance and flow in your room. Too small or too large, and your space can feel off. Here’s how to find the perfect rug size for any room, plus some tips on choosing materials that last:
Choosing the Right Rug Size
- Living Room Rug Size: In the living room, the key is to ensure that at least the front legs of all your furniture are on the rug. This will create a cohesive, anchored feel for the space. For the most balanced look, it’s ideal for all the furniture legs to sit on the rug, but depending on your room’s size and layout, this might not always be possible. If you’re working with a smaller room or limited space, just aim to get the front legs on the rug to keep everything connected visually.
- Dining Room Rug Size: A common mistake we see is using a rug that’s too small for the dining area. This is easy to spot—if the rug doesn’t extend beyond the edges of the table and chairs, it’s likely too small. The key is to ensure the rug is large enough to accommodate the chairs when they’re pulled out. Aim for a rug that extends 24–30 inches beyond the edges of the table so chairs don’t feel cramped. This simple fix will instantly elevate the look and functionality of your dining space.
- Bedroom Rug Size: In the bedroom, we like to see the rug extend beyond the length of the nightstand next to the bed. This creates a balanced, anchored look while ensuring that when you get out of bed, you’re stepping onto something soft—not cold floor or tile. A rug that extends 18–24 inches beyond the sides of the bed will add warmth and comfort, making it a perfect choice for both function and style.
A Note on Layering Rugs Over Carpet
While we love the look of layered rugs, we generally do not recommend layering rugs on carpet unless they are made of heavy-duty wool or silk. The reason for this is that thinner rugs or those made of less durable materials can start to curl at the edges over time, even with a rug pad. The friction and softness of carpet underneath can cause the edges of a lighter rug to lift, which makes them less practical and can ultimately waste your investment. If you’re layering a rug on carpet, be sure it’s a durable, high-quality rug that can stand up to the wear and tear of this setup.
Choosing the Right Rug Materials: Pros and Cons
Choosing the right rug material is just as important as picking the right size. The material will affect durability, feel, and maintenance. Here are some of the most popular rug materials and their pros and cons:
- Wool Rugs
- Pros: Durable, soft, and naturally stain-resistant. Wool is great for high-traffic areas and feels luxurious underfoot.
- Cons: Wool rugs can be more expensive and may shed initially. They can also absorb moisture, which could lead to mildew in humid conditions.
- Cotton Rugs
- Pros: Affordable, lightweight, and easy to clean. Cotton rugs are great for casual spaces and easy to wash in most cases.
- Cons: Not as durable as wool, and they can wear down quickly in high-traffic areas. They may also fade over time with washing.
- Silk Rugs
- Pros: Luxurious, smooth, and shiny. Silk rugs offer a high-end look and feel and are excellent in low-traffic areas or for special occasions.
- Cons: Silk is delicate and can be easily damaged by moisture or heavy foot traffic. They also require more maintenance and care.
- Jute and Sisal Rugs
- Pros: Natural, eco-friendly, and ideal for casual, coastal, or rustic settings. They are durable and have a textured, earthy feel.
- Cons: These fibers can be rough to the touch, so not the best choice for bedrooms or areas where you want softness. Also, they may stain easily and are harder to clean.
- Synthetic Rugs (Polypropylene, Nylon, Polyester)
- Pros: Affordable, stain-resistant, and easy to maintain. Synthetic rugs are often the go-to choice for families with children or pets.
- Cons: Not as durable as natural fibers and can look less luxurious. They can also trap heat and feel less breathable, which might not be ideal for warmer climates.
