Magnolia Journal Simple Shortcake

There’s something about summer that calls for light, fresh desserts—and when we find one that’s both delicious and foolproof, we hold onto it. This Simple Shortcake Recipe from Magnolia Journal has been a go-to in our home for years. Even if baking isn’t really your thing (it’s definitely not mine!), this one somehow turns out beautifully every single time.

Why We Love It

The recipe is just that—simple. It doesn’t require a mile-long ingredient list or any fancy techniques. Just classic, wholesome ingredients that come together into something so nostalgic and satisfying. It’s the kind of dessert that feels like summer on a plate.

The shortcakes are perfectly tender and buttery, and they pair so well with juicy berries. But let’s be honest—the homemade whipped cream is the real star here. It’s just a few ingredients, takes minutes to make, and somehow makes you look like you know exactly what you’re doing (even if you don’t).

HOMEMADE WHIPPED CREAM (Magnolia Table):

1 pint heavy cream, 1/4 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, pinch of sea salt.

In a large bowl, combine the cream, sugar, vanilla and salt. Beat with an electric mixer on high speed until fluffy and the cream holds a soft peak when you pull the beater out of the bowl. Use at once or store in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 30 minutes.

Our Favorite Way to Serve It

We love using fresh strawberries or a mix of whatever berries we have on hand—tossed with just a bit of sugar to bring out their natural juices. Then we layer them on the warm shortcakes and finish with a very generous dollop of whipped cream. Bonus points if you let the kids build their own—it makes dessert even more fun.

The Recipe That Keeps Coming Back

Originally featured in Magnolia Journal, this recipe quickly became one of those “save it and make it every summer” kind of staples. It’s perfect for a dinner party, a last-minute gathering, or just a regular Tuesday night when you want something sweet and simple.

If you’ve made this before—or have your own version—we’d love to hear about it!
