Transforming a Dark, Outdated Kitchen

Every kitchen renovation comes with its own set of challenges, and this recent project was no exception. Our clients came to us with a dark, outdated kitchen that felt difficult to navigate and lacked the functionality they needed for everyday life. The layout created an awkward flow pattern, and the space simply didn’t support how this family wanted to cook, gather, and live.

Like many older kitchen layouts, this space needed a complete rethink in order to improve both storage and workflow.

Working Within a Challenging Layout

One of the biggest challenges of this kitchen remodel project was that we weren’t able to move any walls or extend the kitchen off the back of the home. That meant our design had to work entirely within the existing footprint.

The existing window sink area created sharp angles in the layout, and the available floor space limited how wide we could make the island. These constraints required us to be thoughtful and strategic with every design decision.

But great kitchen design solutions often come from working creatively within limitations.

Designing Storage Where Everything Has a Place

One of the homeowners’ biggest goals was simple: they wanted everything in their kitchen to have its own place.

They envisioned a kitchen where countertops stayed clean and uncluttered—where coffee makers, small appliances, and everyday items could easily be tucked away behind cabinet doors.

Designing intentional kitchen storage became one of the main priorities of this renovation.

Reimagining the Refrigerator Wall

To accomplish that goal, we completely redesigned the refrigerator wall.

The new layout features double built-in pantry cabinets with pull-out trays, creating easy access to dry goods and kitchen staples while maximizing vertical storage.

On either side of the refrigerator, we incorporated double appliance garages, giving the homeowners a dedicated space for their coffee station and frequently used appliances. When the doors close, the entire area feels clean, organized, and calm.

These types of hidden appliance storage solutions can dramatically reduce countertop clutter while keeping everything within reach.

Relocating the Range for Better Function

Another major improvement involved relocating the gas range.

Previously positioned in the island, the range had no proper ventilation to the outside, which is a common issue we see in older kitchen designs.

By moving the range to the wall, we were able to properly vent the gas range outside and improve the cooking experience for the homeowners.

This change also allowed us to design a beautiful custom wood range hood that matches the island. The range wall is now a stunning focal point in the kitchen—replacing the refrigerator that once occupied that space.

Maximizing Storage Without Expanding the Footprint

Another opportunity came from a wall that had previously been left completely blank.

By adding both upper and lower kitchen cabinets, we dramatically increased the storage capacity of the room without altering the kitchen’s footprint.

The kitchen sink remained under the bay window, preserving the natural light and view the homeowners loved while still improving the surrounding functionality of the space.

This approach allowed us to maximize storage while maintaining a balanced and functional kitchen layout.

A Functional Island Designed for Gathering

Because the layout limited how wide the island could be, we focused on making it as functional as possible.

One side of the island features large pull-out drawers, perfect for storing cookware, pots, pans, and kitchen tools. The opposite side includes full-height cabinet doors, providing additional concealed storage.

Kitchen islands work best when they combine storage, seating, and workspace, and this design achieves all three.

Eliminating the Breakfast Table for Better Flow

The new island comfortably seats four to five people, which allowed the homeowners to eliminate their breakfast table entirely.

Removing the table opened up the space and created a much easier pathway to the covered porch. Now the kitchen connects seamlessly to their outdoor living and dining area.

To maintain the warmth and charm of dining furniture, we finished the island with furniture-style legs, giving the homeowner peace of mind that she didn’t lose the feeling of traditional dining furniture—just reimagined it in a more functional way.

Zellige Tile and MSI Valentin Quartz: The Finishing Touches

The finishing materials truly elevate the design of this kitchen.

We sourced a stunning 2×6 zellige tile backsplash, installed in a horizontal offset pattern. The tile was intentionally laid without spacers, allowing the handcrafted edges to create the natural variation that makes zellige tile so beautiful and unique.

For the countertops, we selected one of our favorites: MSI Quartz in Valentin. This quartz surface adds soft movement and warmth while offering the durability homeowners love in a quartz kitchen countertop.

Together, these materials add texture, character, and timeless beauty to the space.

A Kitchen Designed for Real Life

What was once a dark and complicated kitchen is now a bright, functional kitchen designed for everyday living.

From improved storage solutions and a better cooking layout to a welcoming island that brings everyone together, every detail in this renovation was carefully considered.

Now these homeowners have a kitchen filled with intentional design, functional storage, and timeless materials—a space that not only looks beautiful but works beautifully for their family.
