At HHDC, we’re big fans of rug pads, and one of our absolute favorites is the 1/4″ thickness from Mohawk. A talented designer friend introduced us to these years ago, and we’ve never looked back!
We always recommend using a rug pad under any rug placed on a solid surface. Not only does it provide a bit of cushion underfoot, but it also helps keep your rug in place, preventing slips and bumps.
We get asked a lot about rugs on carpeted surfaces, too. While we do love using rugs to help ground a room with carpet, we have strong feelings about what works best. When you’re placing a rug on top of carpet, we believe a heavy wool rug is the best choice.
It won’t curl, roll, or ripple, making it the perfect option for this kind of surface. In this case, we don’t recommend a rug pad underneath, as the wool rug itself offers the right amount of weight and stability.
So, to sum it up:
- For solid surfaces: Yes, a rug pad is a must!
- For carpeted surfaces: Go for a quality wool rug without a pad to avoid unnecessary shifting or bulking.
We hope this helps clear up some of the rug pad questions we often get. If you’re looking for more advice or specific recommendations, don’t hesitate to reach out!

Room #1 (have this in my personal home and have installed it several times, beautiful)
Room #2 (the prettiest shades of pink)
Room #3 (on clearance with an additional percentage off)
Room #4 (for a room that needs some color and yet slightly muted to not be overwhelming)
