How to Decorate a Mantel When There’s a TV Above It

If you’re a designer, you probably just sighed reading that title. A TV above the mantel can feel like a design nightmare. But as someone who designs for real families—and has a TV above the mantel in my own home—I’ve learned that sometimes, function simply has to come first. And that’s okay.

In our home, the TV placement just works for the layout. It’s where our family gathers, where we unwind, and where the room naturally centers. Over time, I’ve learned that it’s possible to make it look both intentional and beautiful.

Here are a few tried-and-true tips that make all the difference:

1. Let Go of the “Perfect” Mantel

First things first—let go of the expectation that your mantel needs to look like the ones you see on Pinterest or in styled magazines. Those spaces are lovely, but most of them don’t have a TV sitting right in the middle. Real life looks different, and that’s perfectly fine. Once you release that expectation, you’ll have more freedom to create something that truly works for your family.

2. Keep It Simple and Balanced

Since the TV already commands attention, simplicity is your friend. Choose a few key pieces that bring warmth and balance—like candlesticks, greenery, a small piece of art, or stacked books. Keep the arrangement symmetrical or visually even on both sides of the screen to create calm and structure.

3. Make the TV Part of the Design

Instead of fighting it, let the TV be part of your design. I love using a Frame TV, which allows you to display beautiful artwork when it’s not in use. If you don’t have one, you can stream art or nature scenes on YouTube to achieve a similar look. It’s such an easy way to soften the presence of the screen and make it feel purposeful.

4. Add Warmth and Texture

A mantel with a TV can sometimes feel stark, so bring in texture to warm things up—woven baskets, natural greenery, or ceramic vases all work beautifully. Layering different materials helps the space feel softer and more lived-in.

5. Think About Scale

When adding decor, keep proportion in mind. You don’t want anything that competes with the TV’s size. Use taller pieces on either side to frame it, and smaller, low-profile pieces across the center to keep the focus balanced.

At the end of the day, homes are meant to be lived in. If a TV above the mantel makes sense for your space and your family, embrace it—and make it beautiful in your own way. With a few thoughtful touches, even this common “design dilemma” can become a cozy, functional, and stylish focal point in your home.
