This Skyland kitchen was ready for a fresh start. The space felt dark and dated, and our client was craving both more storage and a lighter, brighter look. While we weren’t able to change the layout due to exterior wall restrictions—the home’s brick exterior would have been difficult to alter or match—we took on the challenge of maximizing every inch of the existing footprint.

Our client envisioned a classic kitchen with beautiful blue cabinetry and light countertops, and that vision became the foundation of our design. We started by removing the ceiling fan in the center of the kitchen and replacing it with elegant pendants that complement the cabinet hardware, instantly bringing warmth and sophistication to the space.

A key upgrade was introducing a larger stove with an oven below the range, which allowed us to clear the space above for a custom vent hood and a pot filler—a practical and stylish addition. We also replaced the window above the sink, giving the homeowner a better view of her backyard and more natural light.

To improve the flow between the kitchen and dining area, we swapped out the two sets of French doors for a non-gridded sliding door that opens from the center. The result is a cleaner look and easier access, especially when dining or entertaining.

We also extended the peninsula, adding more countertop space and fulfilling our client’s wish to seat all four family members comfortably at the counter—a simple change that made a big impact in both function and family connection.

Storage was another top priority. What was once a basic closet was transformed into a custom built-in pantry with sliding pull-outs on one side and a coat and backpack closet on the other—both concealed behind matching cabinetry doors for a seamless, built-in look.

We also replaced and painted the back door to match the cabinetry, tying everything together beautifully. Fresh wall paint, crisp white trim, and a newly painted ceiling completed the transformation, creating a space that feels both timeless and inviting.

And finally, a huge thank-you to our talented friend Tara Carter of Tara Carter Photography, who captured this project perfectly.

This kitchen proves that even when the layout can’t change, thoughtful design can completely transform how a space feels and functions.
