Some projects invite us to think a little differently about what makes a space feel like home. Our Sikes Road project was one of those, and we had the best time bringing it to life.
Located within a sports facility with indoor baseball training, batting cages, a turf field, a basketball gym, and weight rooms, this space serves a community of athletes and families. Our client wanted a personalized retreat with a kitchen, laundry, and comfortable seating where people could take a break and spend time together.
Highland Home Design Company designed this space from construction selections all the way through full furnishings. These are always some of our favorite projects because we get to consider the whole picture, bringing function, finishes, and furniture together from the very beginning.
A Place to Gather Between the Action
At a busy sports facility, there is a lot happening throughout the day. Athletes need a place to recharge, and families need somewhere comfortable to gather while spending time at the facility.
We approached the layout with those everyday moments in mind. The kitchen and seating areas needed to work together, giving people room to prepare something to eat, sit down, and enjoy conversation. We wanted the room to feel comfortable and connected while allowing easy movement through the space.
One of our favorite features is the roll-up garage door that opens directly onto a covered patio overlooking the turf baseball field. That connection extends the gathering space outdoors and keeps the room connected to the activity that makes this setting so special.
A Kitchen Designed for Everyday Use
The cabinetry required thoughtful planning. Beyond choosing a color we loved, we considered the storage and daily tasks this kitchen needed to support. We wanted it to function well for the people using it while keeping the overall room inviting.
Including a washer and dryer was another intentional part of the design. Having laundry available within a sports facility adds a practical convenience, and we planned for that need as part of the room’s overall function.
For the kitchen surfaces, we selected durable quartz countertops and a large stainless steel sink with everyday wear and tear in mind. The generous sink provides useful space for washing and cleanup, while the quartz gives the kitchen a beautiful, hardworking surface. These selections help the room serve its purpose without sacrificing the finished look.
A Little Baseball Nostalgia
The brick backsplash is one of our favorite details. Its texture and character bring to mind traditional baseball settings, giving the kitchen a nostalgic connection to the facility around it.
Our client loved the cabinet color, and we used that as a starting point for the rest of the palette. Lighter walls, crisp trim, and light LVP flooring balance the cabinetry and brick, keeping the room bright and welcoming.
Furnishings With Our Stamp of Approval
We fully furnished this space with the same attention we gave to the construction design. In a room that will welcome athletes and families day after day, the furniture needs to be comfortable, durable, and ready to be enjoyed.
We selected pieces that get our HHDC stamp of approval, considering quality and everyday use alongside how each piece looks and fits within the room. The furnishings bring warmth and comfort to the space, inviting people to settle in and stay awhile.
Getting to work on a project from construction design through full furnishings is especially rewarding. We can carry the vision through every stage and create a finished space where all the details work together.
A Space for Years of Memories
What we love most about Sikes Road is imagining all the people who will enjoy it. There will be breaks between training sessions, conversations on the patio, and families spending time together around the activities they love.
It was such a joy to create a space with personality and purpose. We hope this retreat becomes a familiar, well-loved gathering place for athletes and families for years to come.
